Spencer Ruelos

Anthropology, Second Degree: BA in CRGS, 2013

After graduating from HSU Spencer Ruelos, Anthropology, Critical Race, Gender & Sexuality Studies, 2013, went on to receive his Masters in Sexuality Studies from San Francisco State University. There he wrote a master's thesis titled: "EveryoneGames: Exploring Queer Gamer Identity and Community," where he examined the worldmaking practices of LGBTQ gamers in digital and physical spaces. While at SFSU, Spencer received the prestigious CSU Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. He is currently continuing his studies of queerness, video games, and technology as a PhD student in the Department of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine.

Ryan Bieker

Politics, 2013

Ryan Bieker, 2013 Political Science, began working at the California Public Employee Retirement System as an associate governmental program analyst administering the affordable care act with public agencies and state departments. Bieker also provides customer education, retirement and health program counseling, and responses to customer inquiries.

Salina Cuddy

English, 2012

Salina was recently awarded aPhD in Linguistics from the University of York. Her research focuses on language, gender, and sexuality. She will be starting a position as a Lecturer in Sociolinguistics at Queen Mary University London this fall.

Bridget McGraw

International Studies, 2012

Bridget McGraw, 2012, International Studies, began at Internews Network, an international non-profit organization. At the organization’s headquarters in Arcata, McGraw is subgrant analyst focusing mostly on a new project promoting independent media in South Sudan. McGraw writes, “Every day at work I use the skills and experiences I gained at university.”

Brittany Britton

Art, 2012

Brittany Britton ('12, Art) received her Master of Fine Arts in Craft from the Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2015. Britton moved back home to Humboldt County and worked as an Art History lecturer at the College of the Redwoods at the Klamath-Trinity Instructional Site in Hoopa. From 2018 to 2020 Britton was the Curator/Registrar of the Native American Collection at the Clarke Historical Museum. In June 2020 Britton became the Gallery Director of the Reese Bullen and Goudi'ni Native American Arts Galleries at Humboldt State University.

Ryan Bieker utilizes data to examine and interpret changes in California retirement law and how it will affect CalPERS' actuarial responsibility to the State of California. Bieker is married to Rita Dunn (HSU politics 2013) who is in her final year of Law School and is currently clerking with U.S. Magistrate Judge Allison Claire.

Trever McSwain

Politics, 2012

Trever McSwain has been practicing law in Indiana since 2016, he is a captain in the Indiana National Guard JAG Corps and a legal aid attorney for Indiana Legal Services Military Assistance Project where he assists low income Veterans.

Kelly Jean Muth

Geography, 2012

Kelly Jean Muth, 2012 Geography, has been pursuing her goals of becoming a professional disc golfer. After graduating from HSU, where she participated in the Humboldt State Disc Golf Club, Muth has participated in several national competitions and has been ranked No. 26 in the world by the Professional Disc Golf Association.

Philip Harris

English, Writing Practices, 2012

Philip Harris, 2012 English, after graduating and being rejected from the five grad schools, took two years off. I was admitted to San Francisco State University's MFA Fiction program in 2014. In the three years of Harris’ MFA, he wrote two novels, a collection of short fiction, a collection of short nonfiction, and a chapbook of prose poetry, which has been accepted for publication through Nomadic Press. The chapbook is a collection of prose poems dealing with identity and culture. Harris cites his time at HSU in the Writing Practices program as establishing the foundation of his writing. “The Flowers in my Mothers' Name” debuts this fall.
