Recruitment and Promotion
Making Connections
You can make connections and promote your service opportunities, whether for course credit (pending faculty approval) or your regular volunteer positions (not for course credit), with Humboldt students and faculty in a number of ways.
Course connections may evolve by
- Cal Poly Humboldt STUDENTS, FACULTY and STAFF approach organizations to learn more about service opportunities that might meet course requirements.
- COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION STAFF approach CPH students, faculty and staff to develop partnerships.
CONSIDER various service activities that might work best for you and the students.
- Academic Interns focus on professional development, with faculty overseeing the students’ 60+ hour service experience per semester.
- Service Learners study academic themes together in a class, while making connections with their activities addressing community needs for an average of 30 hours per semester.
- Students and faculty may also conduct research and other one-time projects for community organizations.
- Articulate what your organization needs and what your organization can offer students
- What might students learn?
- How does your agency support and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds, while addressing inclusivity and equity issues?
- What professional skills might they gain?
- What personal skills and insights might students gain regarding personal strengths, values, attitudes, or character?
- What are the academic dimensions of your work?
- What activities, organization purpose/mission, etc., will help students better understand their course material?
- What can you share about your own experience that is important for students to know?
DEVELOP Promotional Materials:
- Position descriptions help recruit students, promote your opportunities, facilitate screening, and outline expectations.
- Consider creating virtual service opportunities for students who live out of the area, lack transportation or otherwise need accommodations. Find Virtual Service Ideas here.
- Create an eye-catching flyer with basic service positions and contact information.
- Create an email announcement providing information on your service or project needs and attach position descriptions or flyers.
- Integrate information on your website about your service opportunities.
SHARE your promotional material and opportunities widely:
- The Center for Community Based Learning can share your opportunities with faculty and staff. Ask to be placed on a community partner email list - event invitations and surveys are sent each semester for community partners to share current service opportunities with upcoming course faculty/students.
- Table at annual Volunteer Fairs and other community partner outreach events.
- Connect with faculty: research academic department websites for faculty and programs addressing your field of service, visit classes, or serve on panels to share information about your organization.
