Connect with the community through Service Learning and Academic Internship courses!
Service Learning and Academic Internship courses are unique and exciting ways to bring your education into action. Both types of courses will give you the extra, hands-on experience to prepare you for the next steps in your journey through higher education. By getting involved in this type of coursework, you have the potential to positively impact your community and explore and learn more about fields that interest you.
Community Engaged Learning
Academic Internship AND Service Learning courses integrate the knowledge and theory you gained in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional workplace setting. They can be conducted on campus, at an external organization, or virtually. What is the difference between them? Read below.

Academic Internship Courses
- Focus on the development and application of students’ professional skills
- Can be paid or unpaid
- Can take place in for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations, or government agencies

Service Learning Courses
- Focus on addressing a real community-identified need and deep reflection on its connection to theory
- Are unpaid
- Can take place in nonprofit organizations or government agencies (but NOT in for-profit businesses)

Courses & Programs
Internships open to all majors - ANTH 482, BIOL 482, PSCI 482.
SP 121S - Issues in Community Volunteering - earn 1 unit of academic credit for volunteering with Youth Educational Services (Y.E.S.). Y.E.S supports student-initiated, student-led volunteer programs that serve local community needs.
College Corps Fellowship - serve 450 hours per academic year, get up to $10,000.

Library Scholar Internships - project-based learning and undergraduate research opportunities that produce hands-on learning in Special Collections, Digital Media, or Scholarly Communications

Additional Campus Resources
Career Development Center - offers career advising and services such as resume writing, job applications, professional attire, and more to students.
Academic Advising Center - the hub for holistic and proactive academic advising. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor regularly for support in academic planning and success strategies, university policy navigation, and campus resources.
