Getting Approved
Faculty or students may initiate partnerships with a campus or community agency or program in order to fulfill the Academic Internship and Service Learning course requirements.
The Center for Community Based Learning (CCBL) is here to assist the community partners with the contractual and risk management portion of becoming an approved Community Partner site.
Read below about the steps that will need to be completed in order to be a fully approved Learning Site.
Off-Campus Community Partners
To begin the approval process, interested Community Partners must complete the following steps:
- Identify paid staff who will supervise students and ensure a safe, inclusive, and educational experience.
- Verify whether or not your site is already approved. If you have trouble finding a prior agreement, contact CCBL at ccbl@humboldt.edu.
- If your site is not approved, you will need to complete the following documents and return them to CCBL for final approval.
- Learning Site Agreement (LSA) (SAMPLE) - should be signed by your legally authorized signer; email CCBL to get an editable version of this document.
- Learning Site Self-Assessment (SSA)
- Maintain general liability coverage of at least $2,000,000 per occurrence, $4,000,000 aggregate, and be prepared to provide evidence of coverage upon request. Insurance must be placed with insurers with a current A.M. Best rating of at least A:VII.
- Review the U.S. Department of Labor Fact Sheet #71: Internship Programs Under the Fair Labor Standards Act to determine whether interns and students working for “for-profit” employers are entitled to minimum wages and overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Cal Poly Humboldt Programs
With faculty approval, students may complete their Service Learning or Academic Internship course requirements on campus with a Cal Poly Humboldt program or office. Cal Poly Humboldt programs and offices do not need to complete the contractual Learning Site approval process; however, they are strongly encouraged to review the hosting, mentoring, and recruiting information below.
- An on‐site Humboldt staff or faculty member needs to be available as the site supervisor to support students in the following ways:
- Work with the student and course faculty to develop learning objectives and activities relevant to the course and beneficial to your program.
- Provide guidance and ensure a safe, inclusive, and educational experience for the student, while helping with orientation, department emergency procedures, training, feedback, and support throughout the student’s service experience.
- Be aware of the S4 online reporting system for Service Learning and Academic Internship course students. Under faculty guidance, the student will report in S4 their placement site and complete the risk documents required for the experience. If your program/office is not listed in S4, you, faculty, or the student can contact the Center for Community Based Learning for help.
- Verify and sign the Humboldt Student Time Log or Student Learning Plan if brought to you by the student (depends on faculty requirements).
- Provide feedback on the student’s experience, if requested.
- We strongly recommend that the program prepare a position description to clarify expectations for the student before service begins. State goals, responsibilities, and requirements, support a climate of diversity and inclusivity at the site, paid, or unpaid status.
