David Justice, Fisheries Biology, 1995, was promoted to CEO of Alta Vista Credit Union in Redlands, California in November of 2019. Justice married a College Professor who teaches Geography and they have two adult boys who are off to college next year.

William Bernt

Physics & Astronomy, 1995

William Bernt, 1995 Physics & Astronomy, found work immediately doing chemical analysis at Pacific Coast Laboratory. Bernt then moved to New York and found work and his new profession at Brookhaven Instruments Corp, where he ran the research and development lab for five years, sold their equipment for 10 years, and moved to technical sales for other instrumentation companies. He then started his own contract research lab, PCL, Inc. Bernt writes, “ HSU Physics gave me such good education and training. Thank you Bill Alexander, Prof. Thompson, Prof. Chin, Prof. Tam, and all the other great people at HSU Physics. I owe you and the department everything!”

Tyler Smurr

Forestry & Wildland Resources, 1995

Tyler Smurr worked for Sierra Pacific Industries for two years after graduation and then moved to Texas to get married and start a family. He went back to school and got his masters in Education Leadership and Policy Studies. He is currently a Vice Principal at an Elementary school in San Antonio, Texas.

Tyler Smurr, Forestry & Wildland Resources, 1995, was recently promoted to Vice Principal for an elementary school in San Antonio, Texas.

Tyler Smurr, Forestry & Wildland Resources, 1995, worked for Sierra Pacific Industries after graduating from Humboldt State but then met a girl and followed her to Texas. He taught middle school science for 14 years, and is currently an Assistant Principal for a San Antonio Middle School. Smurr says he uses his experience at Humboldt State to talk to students about finding the right place for them and seeing the beauty in the world.

Matthew K Pearson, 1994 Environmental Resources Engineering, is cofounder of DeeditForward, a smartphone app to inspire good deed exchanges between community members and revolutionize fundraising. An app "helping people help others."

Joyce Schlachter

Wildlife, 1994

Joyce Schlachter, Wildlife, 1994, has retired after 26 years with the Federal government, working as a wildlife biologist. Joyce is enjoying her freedom and continues to volunteer with Project Wildlife, rehabilitating bats. Joyce says "thanks HSU for the best years of my life!"

I am living in Portland, Oregon with my family. I teach Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science to high school students. I am building on the excellent science education I received at HSU by taking prerequisites to go back to school to study evolutionary psychology. I loved going to school at Humboldt, and I visit the Arcata area with my family every chance I get.

Doug Downie

Biological Sciences, 1994

DOUG DOWNIE, 1994 Biological Sciences, earned his doctorate in Entomology (Population genetics in grape phylloxera) at UC Davis. Downie spent four years doing postdoctoral research on grape phylloxera, mealybugs, and ants. He took an academic position at Rhodes University in South Africa in 2003, where I stayed to 2011. Downie now works at the Dept. of Pesticide Regulation in Sacramento. Along the way he has published poetry and prose and self-published five books of fiction.
