About Em

Why did you choose this program?

I chose to attend Cal Poly Humboldt and study wildlife for a multitude of reasons. Growing up I always wanted to work with animals but also to be outside as much as possible. The most important aspects that drew me to the program were: hands on learning, the program’s reputation, and the location.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

The Wildlife program prepared me for my current job in numerous ways. I found my passion for avian biology and took most of the classes that were avian-focused during my time at Humboldt. Classes at Humboldt are unique and very hands-on from the beginning. Every class that I took helped to prepare me for my current job. From learning about various survey techniques to using ARCGIS, every skill that I learned while in the wildlife program has applied to my career.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I would say the most enjoyable part of the program was how engaging all the classes were. I am definitely a hands-on learner and every class has some hands-on component integrated into the curriculum. I would like to add that the camaraderie within the Wildlife program was also a major plus! Some of my favorite memories came from study group sessions, group projects, and gave me life long friends!

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

I would tell prospective students that if you want to have a hands-on experience, then Cal Poly Humboldt should be your top pick! All the faculty are wonderful people and their passion for wildlife translates in the teaching. Plus the culture within the Wildlife program is awesome, you will have a ton of fun and meet some pretty amazing people.
