Role/Industry: Fire Captain
Anticipated Graduation Date: Fall 2026

Why did you choose Cal Poly Humboldt for your degree?

I chose Cal Poly Humboldt to pursue my degree in Leadership Studies because the program aligned perfectly with both my professional interests and my schedule as a full-time Fire Captain with CAL FIRE. The program's flexibility allowed me to continue serving my community while advancing my education and leadership skills.

I have worked for CAL FIRE since 2013 and serve as the West Division Training Captain in the San Benito-Monterey Unit along the Monterey Peninsula coast. I am also faculty adjunct at Monterey Peninsula College Fire Academy and a State Fire Training Registered Instructor for multiple courses, including rope and technical rescue, aerial ladder operations, and the company officer series.

What are your career goals?

My career goals are to continue advancing within the fire service while also pursuing opportunities in higher education. Upon completing my bachelor's degree, I plan to apply to a master's degree program to further develop my leadership abilities and expand my impact within both fields.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

My advice to incoming students is that you can do both. You can continue to excel in your professional career while pursuing a degree in your chosen field. Success requires commitment, discipline, and effective time management, but it is absolutely achievable. Don't let a busy schedule prevent you from investing in your education and future goals.

How have you grown from this experience?

This experience has helped me grow significantly, both personally and professionally. The knowledge and skills I have gained through the Leadership program have directly translated into my role as a Fire Captain. The program has expanded my understanding of leadership, taught me new approaches to leading others, and reinforced the importance of creating a positive and supportive work environment. As a result, I have become a more effective leader and a stronger advocate for the people I serve and work alongside.
