Call for Papers: HJSR 2027 Special Issue 49 — Rural Action in the United States: Community-Driven Strategies for Equity, Transformation and Participatory Research
May 7, 2026

The California Center for Rural Policy is pleased to support recruitment and outreach efforts for the forthcoming 2027 special issue of the Humboldt Journal of Social Relations (HJSR).
The Humboldt Journal of Social Relations (HJSR) invites proposal submissions for the 2027 Special Issue 49: Rural Action in the United States: Community-Driven Strategies for Equity, Transformation and Participatory Research. This special issue seeks to advance scholarly and practice-based conversations about rural communities as dynamic sites of both structural inequity and transformative action. For this issue, we welcome theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions that examine the diverse forms, sites, and expressions of rural action across the United States. Submissions may draw from any disciplinary perspective, theoretical tradition, geographic focus, or methodological approach.
Please send your abstracts (250 words) to HJSR@humboldt.edu by 1 June 2026. Authors will be notified whether their abstracts have been selected for the special issue by 15 June 2026. Those selected will be invited to submit full research articles (maximum 8500 words) for peer review by 15 September 2026. We are also interested in featuring commentaries and creative writing (maximum 3000 words) in our special issue. The submission deadline for these items is 15 November 2026.
Thank you in advance for sharing this announcement with colleagues who might be interested.
