The 2016 CSU Media Arts Festival was held on Saturday, November 5th in Los Angeles. Derrick Murrietta, student at Humboldt State took 1st place for his entry, titled "10,000 Steps" in the Short Screenplay category.

Rae Robison was one of several "local luminaries" asked to perform as the Narrator at Ferndale Repertory in their production of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Robison performed to a packed house on Oct. 1, 2016. Upcoming productions feature other HSU staff, faculty and alumni.

Susan M. Abbey

Susan Abbey's course proposal--Acting for the Camera: A Reel Experience--has been accepted for a two week intensive course for Theatre students as part of the CSU Summer Arts, 2017 curriculum. The course, which will be held at CSU, Fresno July 10-23, will feature a professional acting teacher, casting director, and professional actor as mentors to students of theatre who want to learn film and TV acting techniques.

On June 6, Rae Robison was invited, along with 14 other educators and professional designers, to serve as a panelist for Design Showcase West in Los Angeles hosted by the UCLA David C. Copley Center for Costume Design in Film & Television. Topics covered the state of design education in colleges and universities. Rae was invited by Deborah Nadoolman-Landis, UCLA professor and costume designer of the Indiana Jones films among others.

Theatre, Film & Dance faculty member Rae Robison is the featured "Artist of the Month" in the inaugural Small Town Big Art Calendar available in retail outlets all over Humboldt. Alongside artists like Peggy Louden, Laurel Skye, and Duane Flatmo, Rae showcases her costume designs from last year's production of "Hater" directed by Michael Fields. Proceeds from the calendar sales benefit local arts organizations.

M. Rose "Shoshanna" Anthony

Dance, Music & Theatre

Lecturer Rose “Shoshanna” Anthony created and performed a collaborative dance tribute for Nawal El Moutawakel, the first Olympic Gold Medalist from Morocco, first woman Gold Medalist from all of Africa and International Olympic Committee (IOC) leader, as she was inducted into the International Hall of Fame of the International Women’s Forum in San Francisco on Friday, October 26, 2012. She was joined in this endeavor by her Ya Habibi Dance Company (including several HSU students and alumni) and a group of Moroccan style dancers led by Bay Area dance artist Hannah Romanowsky in a colorful and festive dance celebration.

Rae Robison, of the Department of Theatre, Film & Dance is directing the season opening, Humboldt Premiere of the 2010 Pulitzer prize nominated "In the Next Room" (or the Vibrator play) for Ferndale Repertory Theatre. The play revolves around a doctor who treats women's "hysteria," his neglected wife, their marriage and his patients.

Jody Sekas

During the month of June, Jody Sekas was hired as Assistant Art Director for a New Breed Entertainment/Matriarch Media Group independent feature film, “The Lost Coast Tapes.” It was a great opportunity to work alongside film & TV industry pros such as Production Designer Chris Davis & Prop Master Christian Ramirez (The Deadliest Warrior), Director Corey Grant (Hip Hop Task Force, Dysfunctional Friends) and Stunt Coordinator Eric Chen (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Transporter 2). He was able to bring five HSU theatre and film students with him as interns on the film.

Jean O'Hara

In June, O’Hara will direct an indigenous spoken word performance at the Alainait Festival in Canadian Arctic, specifically in Iqaluit, Nanuvut. She will also be presenting the paper "Performing Borderlands: Agokwe's Investigations of Post-Colonial Impacts on Aboriginal Communities" at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education conference in August. She will also be presenting on the panel "Buddies in Bad Times Redefines Queer Theatre in Canada" at this same conference.
