Why did you select Cal Poly Humboldt for your bachelor’s degree?

I selected Cal Poly Humboldt for my bachelor’s degree because the program closely aligned with the coursework and academic focus I pursued through the ACE program at American River College. That continuity was important to me, as it allowed me to build on a strong foundation rather than start over in a new academic direction. Additionally, my academic counselor recommended that I apply to Humboldt State University/Cal Poly Humboldt based on my interests, strengths, and long-term goals, which further reinforced my decision.

Beyond academics, Cal Poly Humboldt’s emphasis on applied learning, leadership development, and community engagement resonated with my professional background. I have completed numerous leadership courses and have held leadership roles within my current workforce, where I have developed skills in team coordination, problem-solving, and accountability. I saw Cal Poly Humboldt as an institution that values these qualities and would allow me to continue growing as both a student and a leader while preparing me for advanced professional responsibilities.

How did Leadership Studies help you achieve your career goals?

Leadership Studies helped me develop practical skills that directly support my career goals, including communication, ethical decision-making, teamwork, and systems thinking. The program emphasized leadership as a process rather than a title, which reshaped how I approach problem-solving and collaboration in professional settings. Through coursework and applied projects, I gained experience analyzing real organizational challenges, leading diverse teams, and adapting leadership styles to different situations skills that have strengthened my confidence and effectiveness in my career.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

My advice to incoming students is to stay curious and fully engage with the opportunities around you, especially with your cohort. Take advantage of hands-on projects, build relationships with professors, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Leadership development happens through experience, reflection, and sometimes failure so embrace the learning process. Finally, stay connected to your values and remember that your time at Cal Poly Humboldt is not just about earning a degree, but about growing as a person and a leader.
