New CCRP Report: Urgent Childcare Gaps in Humboldt County
June 9, 2025

A newly released Humboldt County Child Care Needs Assessment, conducted by the California Center for Rural Policy and funded by North Edge, highlights a growing childcare crisis with wide-reaching impacts on families, providers, and the local economy.
This assessment examines the availability, accessibility, affordability, and economic impact of childcare in Humboldt County, focusing on identifying service gaps and informing practical solutions. Drawing on community-informed data, parent and provider perspectives, and strategies for collaborative action, it paints a clear picture: inadequate childcare access is disrupting the workforce and placing significant costs on local businesses.
Among the findings:
- Families spend an average of 43% of their income on care for two children—well above state and national norms.
- Only 41% of childcare need in the county is met by licensed providers, with especially severe shortages for infants and during nontraditional hours.
- 75% of parents report missing work or relying on others due to childcare issues.
- Local employers lose an estimated $1,150 per year per working parent due to absenteeism and turnover.
The report calls for bold, coordinated action—including expanding flexible childcare options, strengthening the provider workforce, simplifying access to subsidies, and engaging employers as key partners in building solutions that work for families and businesses alike.
