Housing & Residence Life FAQs
Complete the Housing Application through the myHousing portal. Students must confirm their enrollment at Cal Poly Humboldt before they can access the application. The application includes housing preferences, roommate information, meal-plan selection, required documents, and the Housing and Dining Agreement. Visit the Dates & Deadlines page for current application periods and deadlines.
Incoming first-year students from outside the local area are required to live in university housing during their first and second years. Students from Humboldt and Del Norte counties, continuing students, and transfer students are not required to live on campus.
Students who are subject to the residency requirement and believe they qualify for an exemption must complete the Housing Exemption process. Submitting a request does not guarantee that an exemption will be approved.
Housing assignments are made based on application submission, eligibility, available space, housing preferences, roommate requests, and applicable program requirements. Students may rank their preferred residential communities and room types, but specific assignments are not guaranteed. Students may also complete a roommate profile or request a specific roommate through the Housing Application. Roommate requests should be mutual and are subject to space and assignment availability.
Housing costs depend on the residential community, room type, and meal plan selected. Current rates are available on the Housing Cost Comparison page. Meal plans are required in all campus housing areas. Available meal-plan options may vary, so students should review the current Meal Plans page before completing their Housing Application.
The Housing and Dining Agreement is a legally binding agreement. Students seeking to cancel their housing must follow the official cancellation process and should review the eligibility requirements, deadlines, and potential charges on the Cancellation & Appeals page. Moving out, returning keys, or notifying another University office does not automatically cancel the agreement.
Students requesting a disability-related housing accommodation must begin the process with the Campus Disability Resource Center. The Housing Application and the accommodation process are separate, so students should complete both as early as possible.
Requests to live with an emotional support animal also begin with the Campus Disability Resource Center. An emotional support animal may not be brought into campus housing until the accommodation has been approved and all required Housing documents and processes have been completed. Students planning to bring a service animal should contact Housing & Residence Life for information about registration and residential coordination.
Campus rooms include basic furnishings for each resident, such as a bed, desk, chair, dresser, and wastebasket. Bed sizes, appliances, kitchen access, and other amenities vary by residential community and room type. Students should review the Moving In page for packing suggestions and building-specific information.
Appliances or belongings that create a fire, health, facility, or safety risk may be prohibited. Review the Housing handbook and Fire Safety page before bringing appliances, animals, furniture, or other potentially restricted items.
Some common prohibited items include:
- Candles
- Space heaters
- incense
- Personal network equipment (wireless routers, Wi-Fi extenders, switches, etc.)
Routine maintenance requests can be submitted through the myHousing portal. Questions about mail, packages, or lockouts may be directed to the Housing desk. Students experiencing roommate or community concerns should contact their Resident Advisor or Residence Life Coordinator. For urgent concerns outside regular business hours, contact the Resident Advisor on Duty for your residential area. Call 911 when there is an immediate threat to life or safety. Current contact information is available on the Contact & Hours page.
Current campus residents who need a housing reference should use Cal Poly Humboldt Housing & Residence Life as their housing provider rather than naming an individual University employee as their landlord. Before Housing can release rental-history information, the student must complete the Rental Release available under Forms in the myHousing portal. Rental-verification requests should be directed to Housing & Residence Life using the contact information provided in the Rental Release instructions.
Residents must remove their belongings, clean their room and assigned shared spaces, return the room and furniture to the required condition, and complete Express Checkout through the myHousing portal. Residents should also collect outstanding mail and packages before leaving. Students moving out before the end of the spring semester, must submit a Vacate Form found under Forms in the myHousing portal to notify Housing they are moving out.
