The Arcata Marsh System: A model demonstrating local wastewater treatment processes.
In Spring 2026, the Cal Poly Humboldt Library collaborated with a team of Engineering 205 students to create an interactive model of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary’s wastewater treatment system. The model uses a series of lights to illuminate different stages of the treatment process, allowing viewers to follow the flow of water through the system and better understand how each component works together.
By transforming a complex process into an engaging, hands-on experience, the model helps tell the story of the Arcata Marsh, from its history and development to the modifications and systems in use today. The project highlights the innovative relationship between engineering, environmental stewardship, and community infrastructure while showcasing the creativity and problem-solving skills of Cal Poly Humboldt students.
