Augmented Reality Sandbox
The Augmented Reality (AR) Sandbox is student-created interactive learning tool in Cal Poly Humboldt Library’s Hall of Simulation that allows users to shape real sand into landscapes while digital projections instantly transform the surface into colorful topographic maps. As the sand is molded, contour lines, elevation colors, and simulated water respond in real time, creating an engaging way to explore the relationship between landforms and water movement.
Designed to make earth science concepts more accessible and intuitive, the AR Sandbox provides a hands-on environment for learning about topography, watersheds, hydrology, and landscape change. By combining physical interaction with real-time digital visualization, the exhibit helps users better understand how terrain influences the flow of water and the formation of natural features. This immersive approach encourages experimentation, discovery, and collaborative learning.
The AR Sandbox is part of the Hall of Simulation’s broader mission to support simulation-based education through innovative, experiential technologies. Built by students and available to students, faculty, staff, and community members, the exhibit demonstrates how interactive visualization tools can enhance scientific understanding, strengthen problem-solving skills, and inspire curiosity across disciplines.
