Office of Institutional Compliance (OIC)

Office of Institutional Compliance (OIC) supports Cal Poly Humboldt’s commitment to research excellence by providing compliance support to students, faculty, and staff in conducting research with integrity and in alignment with the university’s legal, regulatory, and ethical responsibilities.

By providing a central point of contact, the OIC aims to streamline research compliance processes and foster a university-wide culture of ethical research, care, and accountability.

Institutional Compliance Coordinators Dr. Jennine Crane and Spencer Steinberg are available to assist with a variety of research compliance processes. 

Research Compliance support includes: 
  • Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) - Animal Research Compliance
    All institutions and agencies that utilize live animals in teaching and research are expected to follow federal and state laws that regulate such use. All such institutions must form an IACUC to oversee vertebrate animal use and to help ensure that vertebrates are treated humanely (please refer to the Policy for Use of Animals in Teaching and Research for additional information)
  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) - Human Subject Research Compliance
    Cal Poly Humboldt is committed to promoting, encouraging, and facilitating academic and clinical research. The purpose of Humboldt's Policy for Protection of Human Subjects in Research is both to protect the rights and well-being of human subjects of research and to support the research efforts of Cal Poly Humboldt faculty and students. This policy encourages recognition of the basic ethical principles for the use of human subjects: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice.
  • Responsible & Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR)
    Ethical and responsible conduct of research is essential for research excellence, public trust, and ensuring grant funding. National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) require categories of researchers to receive RECR training. Cal Poly Humboldt supports its research community in upholding the highest ethical and professional standards in our work and passing them on to future scientists through education and training. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs subscribes to the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program. Selecting this link will allow you and your students to take the Responsible Conduct of Research training course at no charge to your department. CITI is also available from MyHumboldt > Faculty/Staff Resources.

NSF policy defines Responsible Conduct of Research as a responsibility to generate and disseminate knowledge with rigor and integrity, including responsibilities: conduct peer review with the highest ethical standards, diligently protect proprietary information and intellectual property from inappropriate disclosure, treat students and colleagues fairly and with respect.
