Foreign Travel Insurance Program (FTIP)

Once your international travel is approved, SPF will arrange travel insurance for you prior to departure.

All SPF-funded international travelers are required by the Chancellor’s Office to have travel insurance coverage. SPF provides this through CSURMA’s Foreign Travel Insurance Program. This program covers all employees and students of the CSU and its auxiliary organizations like SPF when traveling outside of the United States and Puerto Rico on University or Auxiliary business. The FTIP coverage includes, but is not limited to, general liability, medical and emergency evacuation as well as repatriation under the risk of war. This insurance coverage has been designed specifically for the CSU to meet the unique needs of University and Research international travel.

FTIP does not cover auto liability, so anyone renting a vehicle during international travel is required to obtain the auto liability coverage available through the rental company (see Auto Insurance section below for more).

SPF travelers will submit their International Travel Authorization Form, which contains the information required for SPF to request FTIP coverage for the duration of their travel. If additional information is required, SPF will reach out to the requestor for more information. If you are travelling with multiple people or a group, all individual travelers must have travel insurance coverage. Once insurance coverage is bound, SPF will notify the traveler(s) that coverage has been bound and provide a copy of the “Travel Assist Card.” We are available to help if travel plans change, such as shifting departure or return dates, adding new destinations or activities that may impact coverage needs, or as a resource should you have any questions while traveling. Contact risk-management@humboldt.edu if you have any questions about this process.

Be sure to review the following information related to International Travel:

When traveling internationally, it is recommended that travelers use car services, or equivalent, or public transportation when practical and safe. Travelers who rent vehicles internationally for University or Auxiliary business should check with the U.S. Embassy and the rental company for specific auto liability requirements for that country and purchase auto liability coverage through the rental company. SPF’s auto liability coverage may not extend internationally, and if it does, it is typically provided only as excess insurance. Travelers should also purchase auto physical damage coverage for rental vehicles.

Please note that there is no auto liability coverage through FTIP or for international rentals under the CSU’s Enterprise Rental contract.
