Jody Martinez is a researcher and project manager whose work centers on environmental justice, marine ecology, and community-grounded restoration. She earned her BA in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Cruz and completed her MA in Environment & Community at Cal Poly Humboldt, where her thesis examined how kelp forest decline affects Tribal communities in Humboldt and Del Norte counties, and how those communities envision restoration within their ancestral territories. This research contributed to the development of the Ghvtlh-k’vsh shu'-srnelh-'i~ (Kelp Guardians) project with the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, which Jody co-wrote and now manages.

At the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab & Traditional Ecological Knowledges Institute, co-directed by Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy, Jody serves as Director’s Assistant, supporting grants, research, and collaborative projects. She also continues her work with Kelp Guardians as the project’s Grant & Project Manager and as a member of its scientific scuba team, working alongside the Tolowa Marine Department, Sunken Seaweed, and Reef Check.
