Humboldt Short-Term Loan Program

Cal Poly Humboldt offers short-term loans to students to serve as a temporary bridge until the student is able to gain access to their regular source of funds. These short-term loans are extended for ten weeks to help students with school-related expenses and cannot be used to pay for outstanding charges from the University (including Tuition and Fees). Short-term loans are a privilege to the student and can be denied to any student who is not in good standing with the University. Your Fall financial aid cannot repay a short-term loan from any prior semester (including the Spring and Summer semesters).

Student Eligibility

A Cal Poly Humboldt student must meet a minimum set of eligibility requirements to obtain a short-term loan.

  • Must be a regularly admitted Cal Poly Humboldt student and must be enrolled in state-supported, instructional university classes for at least 1 regular unit in the current term. College of Extended Education students are not eligible.
  • Must have paid off all past-due debt owed to Cal Poly Humboldt and all other short-term loans.
  • Students are eligible to receive multiple short-term loans per semester, but can only have one outstanding loan at any one time. Cal Poly Humboldt recognizes that extenuating circumstances can arise; exceptions may be authorized at the discretion of the Student Accounts Manager.

Students must submit their application for a short-term loan to the Student Financial Services Office. To obtain an application, please find the link below, or pick up an application at the Student Accounts Office.

Short-Term Loan Amounts

  • Short-term loans are available for a minimum of $50 and up to $500 each. Exceptions may be authorized by the Student Accounts Manager. The VP of Enrollment Management may also initiate a loan request exception on behalf of a student.
  • Students receiving Veteran benefits are eligible to receive up to $2,500 in short-term loans per semester. The Director of VA Benefits will verify eligibility for short-term loans.
  • Students who are signed up for direct deposit through their student account will have their short-term loan funds deposited into their bank account within two business days after processing is complete. For students not enrolled in direct deposit, a check will be printed and picked up in the Cashier’s Office within five business days after processing is complete.

Short-Term Loan Due Date Extension and Repayment

  • Short-term loans are due in ten weeks (or sooner for Summer short-term loans) and must be repaid to Cal Poly Humboldt at the Cashier's Office or online through the Student Payment Portal in the Student Center.
  • A $25 late payment fee will be charged on any short-term loan not paid in full (or extended) on the day in which it is due. No extensions are possible on past-due short-term loans.
  • A one-time 4-week extension from the due date is available to students if the extension is negotiated prior to the due date, AND the student pays a minimum of 10% of the short-term loan prior to the due date. Spring semester loans that are eligible for an extension can not be extended beyond the last day of the Summer Session.

Availability

  • Fall and Spring short-term loans are available starting 2 weeks before the first day of instruction and are no longer available after the last day of finals for the semester.
  • Summer short-term loans are available starting 2 weeks before the first day of instruction and are no longer available after July 31st. You must be registered for the Summer or Fall term to be eligible for a Summer short-term loan. Summer short-term loans have a 10-week due date OR a firm due date of July 31, whichever occurs first. Fall semester financial aid cannot be used to pay for Summer short-term loans (no exceptions).
