Nshong Nshong, Aiy-ye-kwee’. Cassandra May is a Wailaki and Yurok woman living on the coast in Humboldt County. For the past four years, Cassandra has worked at the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab & Traditional Ecological Knowledges Institute at Cal Poly Humboldt. Her work has focused on the Wiyot Food Boxes Project and the Food for Indigenous Futures Native Youth Council, in addition to supporting general programming, she also helps coordinate the gathering and processing of traditional foods and medicines. This year, she stepped into the role of Project Manager for the lab’s new Food Sovereignty Lab Specialty Crop Initiative Program, which will run from 2025 to 2027. Outside of the lab, she keeps busy serving her community through being a member of the Nutritious School Lunch Initiative for KTJUSD, a board member of the Eel River Wailaki, and a doula with Aunties On The River, Indigenous Birthwork Collective.
