Native American Studies, B.A.

Native American Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt is more than an academic discipline. We're a continuation of Indigenous knowledge from time immemorial with a distinctly tribal perspective on major global challenges, such as climate change, environmental justice, and place-based initiatives. As the first  campus in the California State University (CSU) system to offer a baccalaureate degree in Native American Studies, and still the only program of its kind in the CSU, Native American Studies continues to develop as a stand-alone department, with active input from tribes.

Cal Poly Humboldt is not only a proven leader in serving Native American students in California, but our broad program appeals to non-Native students who are passionate about law and policy, social and environmental justice, sustainability and natural resource management.

Why This Program

Our curriculum helps students develop a critical perspective as well as cultural breadth through the study of Native American perspectives and worldviews.  Students in our program are better prepared for careers by learning how to navigate tribal sovereignty and engage in tribal knowledges.

Located on unceded territory of the Wiyot people and surrounded by 13 Native Tribes, Humboldt provides students across majors opportunities to collaborate with and learn from local tribes through place-based learning initiatives and programs.

Our program is home to the first Food Sovereignty Lab & Traditional Ecological Knowledges Institute, which engages with Indigenous knowledges, environmental management, health, and racial equity  all while recognizing our responsibility to Indigenous communities.

Program Concentrations

Applied Music students focus on developing their skills as performers or composers. An audition is required for admittance into the Applied Music concentration. Typically students complete that audition one or more semesters after they begin their studies at Humboldt. Your studio teacher helps you prepare for the audition. Applied Music students complete a Senior Recital and a course in career preparation.

The Music Teacher Preparation concentration prepares students to teach music in elementary, middle, and high schools. The department is vitally concerned with providing quality experiences to prepare future music educators. A broad spectrum of course offerings provides opportunities to learn all aspects of music education. Following graduation with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Music Teacher Preparation concentration, students may be eligible to enter a professional preparation program leading to a music teaching credential.

Music Studies emphasizes a liberal arts orientation with study of a variety of music styles and music technology, as well as career preparation. No audition is required, and all new students enter the degree program in the Music Studies concentration.

Our music students are very non-competitive. Our faculty and students will help you learn and grow from whatever your current skill level is.

Humboldt students have many opportunities to perform in solo and ensemble settings. Every ensemble performs at least once each semester. Our solo performance opportunities are designed to help you build your confidence and security on stage. You can regularly practice performing in low-pressure classes, slightly-higher-pressure studio recitals and juries, and high-pressure events such as the Concerto/Aria competition or the Honors Recital.

If you need an instrument, we can loan you one that fits your skills, whether you are a beginning player or an advanced student whose skills have outgrown the instrument you own. Students also have access to over 60 pianos including two two Steinway 9-foot concert grands, and a big collection of percussion instruments including  Marimba One marimbas (hand-made in Arcata)

Nationally-recognized artists perform frequently at Cal Poly Humboldt and in the surrounding communities.
