Applied Anthropology, M.A.
Anthropology is a holistic science dedicated to the study of human biological and cultural diversity across time and space. Anthropologists integrate methods and theories from across the sciences, arts, and humanities to gain a deep understanding of how people live in and respond to their environments.

The MA in Applied Anthropology is a relevant and flexible program focused on building competitive, marketable skills. Applied anthropology is the application of anthropological perspectives, methods, theories, and practices to human and environmental problems in academic, professional, and global contexts.
Research Facilities & Collections
The Anthropology Department has multiple laboratories, a collections facility, and a simulated archaeological site, which include state-of-the-art technologies. Students and collaborating scientists use these facilities for classes, hands-on training, and to conduct a wide range of innovative research. Anthropology students have presented their findings at professional conferences, co-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals, and won awards and scholarships for their research.

School Psychology, M.A.
School psychologists play a vital role in the educational and personal development of students. They often help youth succeed in school, not only through direct support but also by designing interventions that meet the needs of students from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. To that end, the Master of Arts in School Psychology program at Cal Poly Humboldt is a comprehensive three-year program of coursework, field experience, and research training. The program helps develop professionals who can apply psychological principles and empirical knowledge in a preventative, proactive, responsive, and helpful manner.
Why this Program
Through coursework and field placements, you will apply what you learn in the classroom through supervised experience working directly in local schools.
Earn a state credential that allows you to work with students in California public and private schools as well as private or community-based agencies.

Practical Experience
An integral part of the program is supervised experience working directly in schools.
Practicum: Under the supervision of Field-based and University supervisors, students complete 540 hours of practicum experience in local schools to develop rudimentary skills in professional school psychology practice.
Internship: The final step in the master’s program. This includes conducting psycho-educational evaluations, participating on student study teams and multiagency coordination teams, developing interventions for youth and families, parent education/counseling, crisis prevention and intervention, and more.

Each year, School Psychology students present their work at professional conferences, such as the National Association for School Psychologists (NASP) Annual Convention.
Students utilize the Psychological Test Library for training materials in standardized psychoeducational assessment to practice assessment techniques for learning disabilities and mental health diagnoses.There are opportunities to work at local k-12 schools and Cal Poly Humboldt’s Student Disability Resource Center.

Learn the basic tools and techniques of counseling psychology. Practical Experience
As a student you will work directly with clients of diverse backgrounds either on campus or in the local community, building critical clinical and personal skills necessary to become a psychotherapist.
- First year: Begin establishing a counseling relationship with one to three clients at Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), which provides Cal Poly Humboldt students support services and is the program’s on-campus training clinic for Psychology graduate students in the Counseling program.
- Second year: Develop and acquire skills in individual, child, family, and group counseling. You will be placed in CAPS or a community agency with primary counselor responsibilities.

A Master of Arts in English, with an emphasis in Applied English Studies, from Cal Poly Humboldt will prepare you for a range of pursuits while enhancing your critical reading, writing, teaching, research, and other scholarly skills. Cal Poly Humboldt’s M.A. in Academic Research is a highly specialized program that provides a foundation in methodology and statistics, as well as in the theoretical frameworks for the major disciplines in psychology. It’s an excellent program for students interested in research and data analysis in key areas of psychology, or for those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. Led by supportive faculty, our rigorous program is grounded in the practical experiences and theoretical backgrounds students need to be prepared for academia and the modern workforce.

Choose from four options–Behavior Analysis, Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, and Social/Cognitive Psychology.
Enroll in the Academic Research program as a Psychology senior at Humboldt and earn your M.A. in Psychology—Academic Research in only one year as part of the Blended program.

Program Emphasis
Behavior Analysis is the design, implementation, and evaluation of instructional and environmental modifications to improve human behavior through skill acquisition and by reducing challenging behavior. This option allows students to develop skills in clinical evaluation research, conducting visual analysis of behavioral data collected from service delivery to inform subsequent treatment decisions, and more broadly, providing applied behavior analysis services for children and adults in areas including education, intellectual disabilities, major neurocognitive disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. This program provides the coursework that is required to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
Developmental Psychology examines social, emotional, and cognitive developmental processes within social and cultural contexts and their relationships with public policy and education. This program prepares graduates to work directly with children, youth, adults, families, and communities in diverse settings and for Ph.D. programs.
Neuroscience is the study of the physiological bases of behavior, particularly how the brain affects behavior. This option provides an extensive background in the biological bases of behavior and numerous research opportunities. This option prepares students for research and analysis in neurological and biological fields and for Ph.D. programs in biological psychology and neuroscience.
Social/Cognitive Psychology focuses on how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by others and the processes underlying these influences. In particular, our faculty focus on group processes and intergroup relations and social influence. This option prepares students for related Ph.D. programs and careers in applied research.
Blended Program
Earn your M.A. in Psychology in just one year after completing the undergraduate Psychology program at Humboldt. This pathway is not available for the Behavioral Analysis option. You may earn a 5th year M.A. with an emphasis in Social/Cognitive, Neuroscience, or Developmental Psychology.
Eligibility requirements:
- Pursue your bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Cal Poly Humboldt
- Enroll in our M.A. program as an undergraduate during your Senior year

The Master of Science in Kinesiology program prepares graduate students for doctoral and professional programs and careers in health, performance, and the promotion of physical activity. Biology M.S.
If you are interested in studying life, it would be hard to find a place with a greater diversity of organisms and ecosystems to choose from than Cal Poly Humboldt. The University is surrounded by relatively pristine biological habitats that provide a wealth of challenging opportunities for study at the master’s level by the aspiring biologist, botanist, or zoologist. These habitats are home to thousands of different animals, plants, and fungi, many of which are unique to northwestern California.
Why this program
Field opportunities include the Marine Lab (a short drive from the campus), the Arcata Community Forest behind campus, and a 90-foot ocean going research vessel, RV Coral Sea.
There are a number of teaching associate positions available to graduate students through the Biology department. Assignments typically include teaching one lab each semester.
Labs on campus are equipped for biotechnology, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, mammalogy, genetic analysis, including DNA sequencing, and computer modeling.

Engineering & Community Practice, M.S.
Among the few programs of its kind in the nation, this one year master’s degree program is designed to develop future engineering leaders who work with and within communities to sustain, restore, and protect our environment. The program draws upon engineering, resource management, Native/Indigenous knowledges and community informed best practices to address environmental issues. It is also designed to integrate theories and methods drawn from Engineering and Native American Studies, preparing graduates to promote social responsibility and civic engagement by building partnerships and projects with Indigenous and underserved communities.
Why this program
Engage in a community based project with one Engineering and one Native American Studies faculty member throughout the entire year. This project will serve as the cornerstone of the program, guided by a balanced range of courses in both disciplines.
Explore Native sovereignty and federal laws and policies, such as Environmental Protection Act regulations—knowledge that is invaluable whether you decide to work directly with tribes or other communities. Apply 'decolonizing methodologies' to the practice of community based partnerships that respect Native sovereignty and self-determination, while critically engaging with engineering practices and policy/legal frameworks that impact Native lands and communities.
Apply engineering analysis and design to identify critical environmental resources problems and solutions aimed at restoring and sustaining the global environment and assist communities who depend on access to natural resources.
